Free-to-play arcade racer World of Speed coming from Need for Speed: Shift developers

More On: Need for Speed: SHIFT 2 World of Speed

Slightly Mad Studios announced that free-to-play online multiplayer racer, World of Speed, will launch this year sometime after a Spring 2014 closed beta. Slightly Mad, an independent London-based outfit, built Need for Speed: Shift and Shift 2: Unleashed, both well-received.

World of Speed hits all the checkboxes we've now come to expect from racing games: exquisite car modeling, track-affecting weather effects, streets loosely based on real-world locations, personal garages, random and buddy team-making, and enough gorgeous sunsets and sunrises to ensure you're blinded around every turn.

That last one can be unfortunate (no matter how lovely), but is no less a part of racing games' calling cards nowadays.

Details are not yet available, but it's a safe assumption that World of Speed's "constant evolution" and free-to-play nature will monetize the best cars and (possibly) new tracks.

In tandem with World of Speed, Slightly Mad is also working on Project CARS with vigorous assistance from crowd-sourced funds.

World of Speed will hold a closed beta in Spring 2014, with a release date sometime later in the year on PC.
