Welcome to the new age, folks, where the idea of ownership is still changing, where changing nothing gets you a standing ovation at E3, and moonwalking your policies back on digital rights management can nab you the number-one spot on Amazon pre-order lists once more. It’s shaping up to be a console war to end all console wars.
What are you playing this weekend?

I'll be wrapping up
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons this weekend and getting into
Oracle of Ages. Beyond that I've also begun focusing on getting through some NES games that for one reason or another I never beat. I recently got through
Super Contra and have begun working through
River City Ransom (I've beaten it co-op, but never single-player), so yeah, I'm definitely going retro this weekend.

I've been finding myself on older systems as of late. I have gotten back into
Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction on the PS2, but I recently picked up
Assassin's Creed III for very cheap and look forward to jumping into some Revolutionary War fun.

Well I just picked up three new games recently.
Donkey Kong Country Returns for the 3DS, which I absolutely love. It feels new, but it also feels like the SNES games, so I am having a lot of fun with this. Second, I bought the digital version of
Animal Crossing: New Leaf. I'll admit, I've never really played any of these games before, but after watching my sister play the original on GameCube for the last month or so, it piqued my interest. I am so glad I got this because it is so much fun and addictive as hell. One suggestion for Nintendo though: please, in future Animal Crossing games, add more things to do at night. Finally, I picked up
The Last of Us. I loved
Uncharted so I'm excited to see what all the fuss is about. Can you believe the studio that gave us
Uncharted,
Crash Bandicoot and
The Last of Us is also the same studio that gave us the atrocious
Way of the Warrior back on the 3DO?

I'll be digging deeper into Game and Wario to finish that out. I'll also be playing DK Country Returns like Nathan, but on the Wii. The difficulty of that game just about killed me last year, but the announcement of Tropical Freeze has inspired me to go back and beat the first one. Yeah, it's going to be a long weekend...

While I do have some stuff that I should be playing officially for "work," I am afraid I just can't pull myself away from
The Last of Us. Never have I played a more gripping game. If and when I do manage to pry myself away, I will gather some more loot in
Marvel Heroes and earn myself some scrolls in Mojang's
Scrolls.

I'm hoping to finally pick up
The Last of Us this weekend to see what all the fuss is about, and I'm also going to be digging into
Magrunner: Dark Pulse to see if
Portal is more fun with magnets or not. I'm also two hours into my first replay of
Half-Life 2 in about five years, and despite the dated graphics the game still holds up really well. I'm just about to get to the airboat section but I had forgotten just how amazing the audio and pacing in the game is.

One benefit to playing one game and one game only? Developing an area of expertise--with an emphasis on "developing." Because I'm all of four weeks into a one-year subscription of
EVE Online, and some Beck lyrics keep looping through my head: "There's a bottomless pit that we've been climbing from, just to get on level ground." This rabbit hole is deep. Send help.

After having reviewed a steady drip of spring games, I decided to play a few old classics and clear out my backlog. I'm halfway through
Jade Empire, being one of the only BioWare games I missed, and I'm loving the characters and combat so far. Aside from that, with
Hotline Miami done, bloody and out of the way, I'll jump back into
Borderlands cooperative sessions with James Kintner and our friends. Those scags won't shoot themselves.
