Far Cry 2 was an odd duck in the world of the FPS. Full of bright ideas - some were brilliant while some would make you want to stab yourself in the eye - Far Cry 2 was only partially successful. The game was so detailed in how its combat worked with ammo stores that would cook off under the right circumstances, fire that acted somewhat realistically, and had a world teeming with life, both human and animal. I felt like I was there in the African jungle. It was so unique that I could mostly overlook the stuff that didn't work like respawning enemy checkpoints and arduous travel.
If Far Cry 3 does what it looks like it can do - namely, double-down on the detail, the lush environments, the shootouts, and the personalities (that was another interesting idea FC2 toyed with but was only partially successful), while giving the player more breathing room by not shooting at them constantly or making simply getting somewhere a pain - it could be one of the best first person shooters ever made.
The following trailer, called the Meet Hoyt sure makes Far Cry 3 look like it's heading in the right direction.
Far Cry 3 looks like it's still set for a December 4th release, but you can never be too sure with with an Ubisoft game that doesn't have Assassin's Creed somewhere in the title.
