Spelunker gets an update
Cyril
wasn't too pleased with
Spelunker HD, but maybe some fresh DLC will breathe new life into this PSN title. Developer Tozai Games has some new DLC for Spelunker with a new update and the Championship Mode packs. The update and seven subsequent Championship packs add 10 stages each, for a total of 80 new levels for the game, complete with a life count increase and trophies. In addition, for two weeks starting August 28th, the game and all the DLC will be 50% off. Japanese gamers have had a chance to take these new levels for a spin, so it's nice that Tozai is bringing them over to the states at a discount.
Tozai Games Announces Update and Championship Mode DLC Packs
For Spelunker™ HD for the PlayStation®Network
A bounty of even more punishing stages, plus a special low 50% off price
for PlayStation®Plus Members!
Bellevue, Wash.--August 24, 2012--Tozai Games announced today that Spelunker HD will be receiving a software update on August 28th that includes a new area, and seven additional downloadable Championship Mode DLC packs to follow for both North America and Europe. The patch and each DLC pack will include a new area with 10 stages, totaling up to 80 additional levels to explore and conquer, as well as increased lives and extra content trophies. The update for Spelunker HD will take place in both Europe and North America on August 28, 2012.
Additionally, PlayStation Plus members will be able to purchase both Spelunker HD, as well as the new Championship Mode DLC packs for 50% off for two weeks starting from August 28th 2012*.
The update improves screen views in Spelunker HD's exciting online multiplayer mode, and EX1, the first expansion pack will be included for free as part of the patch. Packs EX2 through EX8 will be available soon after for $1.99/€1.99 each. To round out the bevy of Spelunker goodness, two more packs are expected next month.
"Fans in Japan salivated over each Championship Expansion release, but we're excited to now be offering them all at once to both North America and Europe," says Scott Tsumura, Tozai's co-founder. "Spelunker addicts beware, because the new stages really turn up the heat! To wit, Championship mode provides fifty lives at game start as opposed to only five in the original mode."
In Spelunker HD, the player navigates each labyrinthine level to reach an ancient statue that stands at the entrance to yet a deeper, more heinous cave. En route, you may operate the archaic mine equipment and ride the automated machinery to aid in your quest. You'll collect a plethora of items and power-ups, encounter a vast array of creatures, and detonate bombs and launch flares as you run, jump and climb your way ever deeper. When nostalgia strikes, an option to play in the original 2D graphic style is also available.
This devious reimagining of the classic 1983 platformer created by Tim Martin contains all the fun and teeth-grinding challenge of the original, but with bold new 3D graphics, 100 freshly designed levels (and soon to be 100 more), and both co-op and competitive multiplayer modes for up to six players.
Spelunker HD received a PlayStation Store Top Sales Award when it first became available in Japan in 2009. It also received a truckload of critical acclaim in North America and Europe including a Best of 2010 award from Joystiq.
