Variety reported today that
Michael Fassbender, star of recent films like
X-Men: First Class,
Shame, and
Prometheus is now attached to a future
Assassin's Creed adaptation through his own production company DMC Film.
He's expected to co-produce and star in the film as the "hero." The article doesn't actually state whether or not that means he's been cast as Desmond, Altair, Ezio, Connor, some combination of those four, or none of them. It simply states that:
"Michael Fassbender was our first choice" to play the franchise's iconic hooded hero, said Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Paris-based Ubisoft Motion Pictures. "Michael (Fassbender) is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor."
"Iconic hooded hero" almost seems to me like an attempt to completely obfuscate the identity of the film's main character. I don't know how I feel about that. It would obviously be idiotic, but also completely unsurprising if they chose to make the protagonist a brand new character.
There's no word yet on when the film might be released.
