All I can say is wow. I'll be the first to admit that Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning looks like a pretty interesting title, but 38 Studios seems to be planning on the brand-new franchise developing an insane level of pre-order hype, a level of pre-order hype many established franchises don't generate. Check out these numbers:
Starting with the most sane, we have the Special Edition that runs you 80 bucks (otherwise known as 10 more bucks than most basic-level special editions), for which you get a custom parchment map of the world, a custom seven-piece set of dice for your next tabletop gaming session, a full set of 40 Destiny Cards that are featured in the game, and the game's soundtrack.
Next we ramp up the crazy to the, limited to 700 units, Collector's Edition available for the kinda jaw dropping price of $200.00. For that, you get everything in the SE plus an individually numbered Prismere Troll figurine created by McFarlane toys (normally retails for $125 dollars), and a high quality concept art lithograph from Reckoning signed by Ken Rolston.
Finally we reach the pinnacle of indulgent special editions with the Signature Edition, which is limited to 300 units and will cost the fibrillation-inducing price of $275.00. You get everything that comes in the other two editions plus an individually-numbered custom sketch by Todd McFarlane that's limited to 300 units and the Prismere Troll figurine from earlier but this time it's signed by Todd McFarlane, R.A. Salvatore, or Curt Schilling and is also limited to 300 units.
So yeah, those are some seriously premium bonuses at some seriously premium prices. They're definitely going for rarity and Todd McFarlane name recognition, and all I can say is that it sure seems ambitious for an unestablished property.
All three are available for pre-order at
