This isn't too surprising but Satoru Iwata has
confirmed that the
Wii U won't be able to play any DVDs or Blu-Rays. Blu-Rays I can understand since there's a licensing fee associated with it as well as the higher cost of the drive. DVD's not being able to be played on the system is the same deal as the Wii.
Now, that's not to say someone can't hack the Wii U into playing DVDs as that's been done. While DVDs are still huge, it's declining due to services like Netflix and I can understand Nintendo not wanting to add any more costs to what is probably going to be a higher priced system than what Nintendo folks are used to.
And let's be honest. You most likely have something in the household to play DVDs already and unless you were looking for an all in one solution, you probably don't really care about this. I know I don't. Then again, I'm not picking up a system.
