With the news that Sony is starting to get
PSN and other services
online slowly, Bloomberg
has an interesting article from yesterday that states the hackers that invaded Sony’s PSN,
Qriocity and
SOE servers (which was the largest data breach in history) actually used leased servers from Amazon’s WebServices cloud unit.
While this isn’t earth-shattering news (as many large-scale hacker attacks are launched this way), it is a bit ironic that one corporate behemoth was used to take another corporate behemoth down. More importantly, it gives some insight into how the hack was done and where the shift to “Cloud based” services may be at risk. With some people ready to declare console gaming dead and a shift to the cloud inevitable, this is just another example of why we still have a long way to go before that becomes the norm and not just a piece of the gaming universe.
