It is no shock that some of the more “conservative” retailers in North America may have expressed some concern for the cover images of Atlus’ upcoming
Catherine. Both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 version of the game are scheduled to use the same provocative cover art as the Japanese release of the game. In order to appease the concerns of those retailers who may be wary of displaying such product(s) in their store, Atlus has announced that they will offer alternate covers of both versions of the game.
As you can see in the images below, which display both the original and alternate covers of the game, the changes made simply involve a severe cropping of the original image. Some were concerned that the sexual innuendos depicted in the original cover were a little “too graphic” for the general public. While Atlus hasn’t explicitly named the retailers that may have complained, I don’t think that it is a far stretch of the imagination to think that it probably rhymes with Ball-tart.
An official statement from Atlus was posted by
Andriasang:
“In addition to the existing North American covers for Catherine on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, there will also be modified designs that appear in select markets. The vast majority of copies available at launch will feature the cover we originally unveiled, essentially the Japanese cover of the game. A small percentage of copies, however, will feature a cover that is more considerate of certain retailers’ broader customer demographic. Fans need not worry; Catherine’s cover art is NOT being altered for North America. There is just an extra option being made available for more sensitive shoppers.”
Catherine launches in North America on July 26, 2011.
