Variety is reporting that Screen Gems has purchased the film rights to Capcom’s
Devil May Cry series. The Hollywood project is already underway and a script is being prepared by writer Kyle Ward.
Screen Gems has produced some of the better video game to movie adaptations in their work on the Resident Evil series. Granted, the movies haven’t exactly been faithful to the video game originals but the results have been a lot better than most of the other game-based movies that have been produced in the past. The first film will reportedly revolve around the original star of the DMC series, Dante and his quest to avenge the murder of his mother.
I am not going to be irrational and get my hopes up for this project, but I do think that there is potential here to break the curse of video game movies. The source content is crazy enough that it just might work... though I still think that game developers should stick to animated features like the Dead Space and Final Fantasy movies.
