The Escapist has posted their new issue for this week and included among them is this
piece on the history of the Wing Commander series. While it's a bit of a short piece it does provide some insight to one of the better gaming franchises that has faded away. The series was one that I can directly attribute to my current profession as I spent hours tweaking config.sys and autoexec.bat files to squeeze every ounce of performance out of my computer to play the games. Freelancer was also one of the first
reviews I ever wrote for GN so that adds a little extra relevance to the series for me.
If you are looking for a modern example of this genre you should check out
DarkStar One, a new space flight game from CDV. I've just started playing the demo and it's actually pretty solid so far. Check out the
website for more info on the game.
