It is that time again... which happens every couple of years. It appears as if the “phasing out” of Microsoft’s Windows XP has begun, thanks to the development team at DICE behind the upcoming
Battlefield 3.
Johan Andersson of DICE recently revealed some insight behind the upcoming EA shooter’s system requirements on the PC end of things, and they don’t include support for Windows XP. The Frostbite 2 game engine, which will power Battlefield 2, was designed primarily for DirectX 11. DX9 and Windows XP will not be supported. Period.
Battlefield 3 is the first title to officially begin the inevitable process of phasing out Windows XP, which is now two OS-generations old. Microsoft tried to do the same when Halo 2 was released on the PC along with their Games for Windows operative a few years back, but eventually changed directions and included support for the now aging OS.
Another year or so, and we may not have a choice in the matter... it’s Windows 7 or bust when it comes to Windows people... I guess that we all, including myself, need to get on the train soon... or continue using Linux and the Mac OS. Either way, XP is being removed from the equation
