I never thought that I would be typing these words, but Commodore is bring the
Commodore 64 back to the market for a whole new generation of gamers and would-be programmers. Commodore USA has revealed the specifications for the new system on their
official website.
The new package looks EXACTLY like the classic system with all of the components built into the classic keyboard design and it is even offered in an ugly beige color. The new system will contain the following:
-
Mini-ITX PC motherboard
-
Dual Core 525 Atom processor
-
Nvidia Ion2 graphics chipset
-
Slot loading DVDR/W drive
-
optional Blu Ray drive
-
Wireless N Wifi
-
2GB DDR3 RAM (expandable to 4GB)
-
5 USB slots
-
Multicard media reader
-
DVI, HDMI, and VGA video connections
The system will run Commodore’s Linux-based OS called Workbench and will be able to run the entire original C64 library via emulation. The launch date for the new system has not been determined but will be announced on the website once it has been decided. I know plenty of people who are frothing at the mouth at the site of this thing. Take a look:
