Hands down one of the best games on the Wii is
House of the Dead Overkill, and now the
rumor is circulating that Headstrong Games is working on a sequel for Sega, due out next year. If so this is great news. Overkill was simultaneously creative and nostalgic, an old school light gun shooter that used the Wii's graphical limitations to its advantage to create a janky, scratchy grindhouse experience. The self-referencing 70s exploitation style was priceless, with instantly memorable characters and a line-pushing script full of expletives, outrageous situations and crude, clever humor.
The game was brilliant but completely out of place in the Wii's library at the time, and up until a few month ago when we started getting Donkey Kong Country, GoldenEye and Conduit 2 promised for the Wii, I would've never believed Overkill would get a sequel. Then again it might show up on PS3 Move or 360 Kinect, but considering the first one used the Wii's low-tech innards to imply a seemingly low-budget grindhouse film, pumping it out in pixel-shaded HD resolution seems a little wrong.
