Nintendo kicked off their E3 conference this morning with a live demo of the new
Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. I admit it was pretty cool to see Miyamoto come out on stage and demo the game but things kind of went down hill. Apparently there was a lot of interference so the controls were a bit janky. I imagine the game plays a lot smoother considering we've already seen much more precise WiiMotion Plus controls in games like Red Steel 2. Link has some cool new weapons like a whip and a remote control beetle and he can use MotionPlus to adjust the arc of arrows and bombs, it's just a shame they weren't working too hot. I like the more streamlined item selection though, considering Link's inventory is one of the few aspects that's started to feel clunky in the more recent games.
I'm a little torn on the art style. It looks like they took the more realistic contours and environments from Twilight Princess and applied the brighter cel-shaded style from Wind Waker and the DS games. Overall it looks more vibrant and cheerful than Twilight Princess but Link looks about the same, so Nintendo is probably trying for a synthesis of the two styles.
I'm a little bummed that we won't be getting this game until next year, but the holiday has some great things to tide me over like Retro's new Donkey Kong and Activision's GoldenEye 007 remake. Hopefully one of our team members on site at E3 will get some hands on time and confirm whether the controls are jittery or solid.
