It looks like Sega has shuttered more than a few GameWorks arcades nationally. Here in Columbus they've
shuttered the one at the Easton shopping market and a quick search on
Google news shows that we aren't the only ones impacted by the move. The Gameworks
website is only listing eight locations now which is down significantly.
Honestly I can't say I'm surprised any more as the stand-alone arcade is something that has been dying off for years with this generation of consoles really putting the nails in the coffin. I'm sure there will be niche stores in certain cities that keep the tradition alive but it's hard to justify leaving the house to play a game when I can fire up Xbox Live and play against people across the planet on my Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.
While I'm not surprised by the move I am a bit saddened as I grew up in arcades. Whenever we moved the first thing I did was to try and find the local arcade and I remember spending way too much of my time and allowance in the Crazy Catz arcade (primarily on a
Cyberball 2072 tournament machine) during my High School years. Oh well, such is the price of progress.
