Just like last year when I wasn't surprised with
Spore being pirated the most,
this year's "winner" is
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. With what Infinity Ward did to nerf the PC version, I am not surprised that a lot of gamers passed on purchasing the game. The game sold about 4+ million copies in 24 hours but has been pirated about 4 million times since release.
I've been playing the Call of Duty series on the PC since it's inception and have loved each one by Infinity Ward.
Modern Warfare 2 was the first one I passed on the PC just because of the things they took out on the PC side. Of course, I would never go and pirate a game because of this but I wonder how many of those that did download the game changed their mind on putting down $60 and instead went to a torrent site to grab a copy.
So what can we expect from this? I'm sure Activision and Infinity Ward knew they were going to get a lot of unauthorized copies floating around when the game came out but would it have been less if IW put forth the effort in the PC version like they did in the past? And how will this affect future iterations of the title by Infinity Ward or even those in the Call of Duty series? Only time will tell.
