Alpha Protocol is not a unique game, rather it is a mish mash of different ideas, good ideas, packaged together in the skin tight leather of the spy genre. With third person gameplay that's as much Drake's Fortune as it is Mass Effect and a dialog system and other RPG fares lifted directly from the pioneers of the shooter/RPG hybrids,
Alpha Protocol is a game like no other and yet at the same time, as any other. Michael Thorton is a spy set loose from normal restrictions and regulations, operating under alpha protocol to assassinate a wanted terrorist before he unleashes prototype portable missile launchers on an unsuspecting public. As far as spy stories go the plot is so-so. However the intrigue lies in how Thorton is to go about accomplishing his goal. Without direct support he has to scrounge together resources and information from where ever and whoever he can. The heart and soul of the game lies in the player's ability to build Thorton from the ground up, guiding him through every danger and obstacle, building the man and the resources to put a stop to this global threat.
As my friend Shaggy would say "That's enough of the sales pitch".
I just wanted to give you guys a heads up on
Alpha Protocol because it might be one of the games that slips under your radar this Autumn. I have been anticipating this title since its annoucement last year and I think its going to be a lot of fun. Don't just take my word for it, watch the latest developer walk-through video revealed at this years San Diego Comic Con.
