I'm desperately trying to not make Twisted Pixel's new game title sound like the "Trojan Maaaaan" condom commercials. But
'Splosion Man, in name alone, comes too close for comfort to the oddly memorable prophylactic ad campaign. Now that I've thoroughly disgusted everyone--and digressed to a completely irrelevant point--
'Splosion Man comes from the same development house that produced
The Maw, the 3D action-platformer that'd
captured critical attention during a somewhat indie-dry early part of the year.
'Splosion Maaaaan! (sorry) has narrowed its concept down to something very easy for any gamer to grasp: "Let's just make a game where stuff blows up," said Twisted Pixel CEO Michael Wilford during an in-house interview. "Yeah," chimed in Creative Director Josh Bear, "lots of 'splosions ... like a guy made out of 'splosions, and he'd be like
'splode 'splode 'splode and then things die." Art Director David Leung clarified, "He'll 'splode people, and they'll blow up into big steaks and ribeyes and stuff." Lead Designer Sean Riley waxed cinematic in his approach as he described, "Put it in a lab, with lots of glass to break. Then slow motion, and scientiests diving away, being all like,
Oh no, I can't believe we made the 'Splosion Man!"
To sum up, Twisted Pixel answers the question before the interviewer can't begin probing too deep. "No no no no. No. Just 'splosions. We blow the whole budget on things getting 'sploded. What the hell else do you need?"
With an excessive amount of destructible environments, along with an excessive amount of the aforementioned big steaks and ribeyes,
'Splosion Man could certainly turn into another indie love affair. Less novel in concept, perhaps, than
The Maw, but then again,
The Maw was all about what happens to a boy and his blob when they
don't explode -- and apparently,
'Splosion Man will be far too incendiary a title to go that route again.

Then slow motion, and scientists diving away, being all like, Oh no, I can’t believe we made the ‘Splosion Man!”
Adds Sean, “But then they’d get ‘sploded too.”
